Abstract:
PURPOSE: To safely operate a lamp with no protective tool by providing a translucent outside envelope enclosing the inside and having a minimum wall thickness exceeding 1mm. CONSTITUTION: The weakest portion of an envelope 12 encloses a capsule 20, and the minimum wall thickness of the cover 12 is the critical factor for sealing. The minimum wall thickness exceeds 1mm. The light source capsule 20 is fitted in the outside envelope 12 by metal straps 22, 24 capable of being welded to a metal frame 26. The light source capsule 20 is very rarely ruptured for some reason. The light source capsule 20 is a both-end type metal halide arc discharge tube made of quartz glass. A means for shielding the outside envelope 12 from the rupture of the light source capsule 20 is installed in the outside envelope 12. The shielding means includes a shield 28 serving as a translucent true cylinder enclosing the capsule 20 from the side. The shield 28 is formed into a dome shape at one end or both ends to enclose the capsule 20 more completely.
