A device 10 having a substitutional inking/coating assembly 113 is arranged in a lower cradle assembly 100 in order to apply flexographic printing or aq. ink and/or a coating material to the plate or blanket attached to a blanket cylinder 34. The liquid ink housed in an open type ink fountain pan 117 is supplied to an open type single doctor blade anilox roller assembly 113 and transferred to the carved transfer surface of an anilox roller 66 as the anilox roller is rotated within the ink fountain pan 117. Excessive ink is removed from the transfer surface by a single doctor blade 68B. The liquid ink is sent to the pan 117 from the supply source 73 provided outside the machine under pressure by a pump 120.
