The feature quantity of vehicle acceleration and the feature quantity of driving engine power are continuously measured. A gear shift speed range and a speed range with its boundary determined by lowest and highest attainable speed in a target gear can be set to a gear shaft method in an initial gear. The boundary of the gear shift speed range are determined at least by the lower gear shift speed and upper gear shift speed, and the boundary of the speed range are determined not only by the lower target speed but also by the additional speed. This gear shift method is started according to the measured acceleration. At the time is of starting gear shift in a large number of gear shift speeds, the lower target speed is attained by a gear shift method in a first limited state (high acceleration in low input speed and limited deceleration in low input speed). A gear shift method between the first limited state in the target gear and the highest attainable speed is started according to the measured quantity in the gear shift speed range in the initial gear.
