To detect the seating posture of a driver and detect whether the driver is seated since the driver is injured as a result of a fairly heavy shock being applied on the crew during deployment of an air bag since the distance between the crew and the air bag is too near even when the distance between the driver and the air bag is far if the driver is seated at the front of the seat, namely, seating is effected shallowly.
A crew monitoring device is provided with a seat position sensor to detect the position of the seat based on a vehicle; a distance sensor mounted on the vehicle and outputting light toward the seat from a light emitting element and receiving reflection light by a light receiving element and outputting information of a distance to the driver on the seat; and a driver detecting means to detect the presence and the attitude of the driver on the seat based on seat position information and distance information. The distance sensor is pointed to a position below a line linking the distance sensor and the tip part or the rear end part of the vehicle. Or a sensor to detect the motion of a head rest is situated as a seat position sensor. Or a sensor is provided to detect the motion of a seat lifter to elevate up and down the seat.
