To perform an appropriate preliminary operation according to the situation around a vehicle.SOLUTION: A driving assistance device comprises: a braking control unit that refers to output of a first detection device detecting the presence of objects present in front of a vehicle, and when the degree of approach between the vehicle and a target object of the objects satisfies a first condition, instructs a braking device of the vehicle to stop the vehicle; and a steering and avoidance control unit that instructs a steering device of the vehicle to avoid contact with the target object by steering. The braking control unit includes a first preliminary operation control unit that performs a first preliminary operation when the degree of approach satisfies a second condition. The driving assistance device further comprises a second preliminary operation control unit that performs a second preliminary operation when the degree of approach satisfies a third condition and when no space where the vehicle can travel is determined to be present after avoiding the target object. The first preliminary operation control unit or the second preliminary operation control unit refers to output of a second detection device detecting the state of passengers in the vehicle, and changes settings of the first preliminary operation or the second preliminary operation according to the detected state.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
