To provide the echo canceller which has a high adaptation capability even in circumstances, where ambient noise exists, and has an average optimum filter coefficient by instantaneous judgement.
This canceller eliminates the echo of a reception signal x(n), which is leaked from a reception speaker to a transmission microphone, from a transmission signal y(n) by first and second adaptive filters 100 and 200. First and second adaptive filters 100 and 200 use error signals e1 (n) and e2 (n) between reception and transmission signals x(n) and y(n) and output signals d1(n) and d2(n) of respective adaptive filters to update filter coefficients h1 (n) and h2 (n) in different steps μ1 and μ2. A selection part 300 selects the adaptive filter to be applied to sampling of the transmission signal y(n) in accordance with error signals by a switch 310.
