PURPOSE: To enable cutting an equal amount on the center basis and a constant amount independent of width fluctuation with simple construction by actuating a pair of cutting heads movable orthogonally with the travel direction of a steel strip through the control of a cylinder.
CONSTITUTION: The width of a steel strip 2 is inputted in a control device 16 as a known value or an output value from a width detector at an upstream, a cutting head 5 is actuated with a cylinder 14 via a control valve 17, the position of the strip 2 is detected with a position detector 18 for feedback to the control device 16 and the strip 2 is preset. In a center position control cutting wherein the strip edge is machined by an equal amount on the basis of the center thereof, the strip edge position is detected by an edge position detector 15 and the head 5 is so controlled with a control device 16 as to make a center between cutters 6 agree to that of the strip 2. And in the case of edge position control cutting wherein a constant amount is machined independent of width fluctuation, the control device 16 controls the position of the head 5 so that an edge machining amount will be constant.
