To mitigate or prevent the lowering of the degree of freedom for design caused by fixing reference positions of paper.
An edge regulating device 5 includes: a first edge guide 14 with a rack 14b disposed thereon; a second edge guide 15 with a rack 15b shorter than the rack 14b disposed thereon; and a pinion 16 meshing with both racks and moving both edge guides in opposite directions as it rotates. When the size of paper does not exceed a predetermined size, both the edge guides are moved by the same movement amounts in the opposite directions with reference to the center. However, when the size of paper exceeds the predetermined size, the meshing between the rack 15b and the pinion 16 is firstly released, and only the second edge guide 15 becomes freely displaceable, and a regulated surface 16b formed on the pinion 16 and a regulating surface 15c formed on the second edge guide 15 are opposed to each other. Then, the rotation of the pinion 16 is locked, and the first edge guide 14 is locked at a predetermined position, thereby being switched into a one-side edge reference.
