PURPOSE: To improve the biting of a rolling material so as to prevent the buckling of the material during rolling and to permit large cross rolling reduction by inclining the upper part of a vertical roll pair in the direction opposite from the progress direction of a rolling material within the vertical plane parallel with the progress direction.
CONSTITUTION: The upper part of a pair of the vertical rolls 1 is inclined at a suitable angle θ (about 5°) in the direction opposite from the progress direction of the rolling material S within the plane parallel with the progress direction. The material S tends to curve by receiving rolling down force in the resultant force (f) direction of the rolling force F and the upward component of force fR of frictional force but is restrained by a table roll 2 so that the large cross rolling reduction is made possible without buckling. Since the rolls 1 are inclined by about 5W10° so as to widen the space in the upper part thereof, the rolls start the biting of the top surface of the material S at C' which is below the limiting biting quantity C. The rolling material is thereby satisfactorily bitten. The large cross rolling without buckling is thus made possible.
