This compressor operates a load reduction mechanism when an electric motor and the compressor are started and rotated at a low speed to reduce a suction volume of the compressor temporarily so as to reduce a start torque. For example, in an electrically driven swash plate type compressor 100, a swash plate 8 is supported by an elastic means 10 to reduce an inclination angle of the swash plate 8 when it stops. Consequently, a stroke of a piston 11 is reduced, and a drive torque required at the time of start is reduced. Moreover, in an electric scroll type compressor, a bypass port between an operation chamber and a suction chamber is opened at the time of start to reduce a start torque by a spool vibrating synchronously with the revolving vibration of a rotor. In order application, a centrifugal clutch may be provided on a shaft of the motor to engage it with the compressor after the number of revolutions increases.
