This electric discharge machining device has a wire 2 for machining a workpiece 1 and machines the workpiece 1 by causing electric discharge between the workpiece 1 and the wire 1. The machining device has a first voltage applying circuit 3 that has a build up time longer than a discharge formation delay time in the application of a rectangular voltage pulse when the discharge between the workpiece 1 and the wire 2 is an average value in machining and causes the electric discharge by applying a voltage pulse building up to the same voltage as the rectangular voltage pulse between the workpiece 1 and the wire 2.
