To enable an electric double layer capacitor to be enhanced in capacity, electrochemical cycle properties, and stability, by a method wherein pyridinium salt represented by a formula and as small in size as cation applicable to the surface fine holes of a carbon material is used as electrolyte dissolved into non-aqueous electrolyte in a specific range of concentration.
Pyridinium salt represented by a formula is dissolved as supporting electrolyte into a nonaqueous organic solvent in a concentration range of 0.5 to 5 mol/L. In a formula, R1 to R6 denote each separately hydrogen, halogen, a nitro group, a cyano group, an amino group, a sulfonyl group, a sulufonate or an alkyl group or an alkoxy group whose number of carbon elements is 1 to 10 or an allyl group whose number of carbons is 6 to 10. These groups may be a parfluoro substitution product or a fluoro substitution product where hydrogen is substituted with F, bonds such as ether, ester, amide, and sulfone may be contained in an alkyl group or an alkoxy group, X denotes a monovalent or a bivalent anion, and a letter j denotes the valence number of X.
