To provide an electro-optical device which will not cause deterioration in transmission of its liquid crystal or destruction of its domains.
A liquid crystal device 1 comprises a substrate 10, a substrate 20, an orientation-processed film 16 which is not disposed on the substrate 20 but is disposed on the substrate 10, and a liquid crystal which is sandwiched between the substrate 10 and the substrate 20, in such a manner that the surface on which the oriented film 16 of the substrate 10 is disposed is opposite to one surface of the substrate 20, and to which a material that generates spontaneous twisting in the amount that satisfies the formula d/p=0.25 is attached, where p is the spontaneous pitch of the liquid crystal, and d is the thickness of the liquid crystal layer.
