PURPOSE: To improve the display quality of an element, to facilitate the manufacture of a driving circuit, and to eliminate the need for the supply of external power by connecting two split counter electrodes to a solar cell so that one is conneceted to an EC material and the other to a negative potential.
CONSTITUTION: A display elecetrode plate formed by providing an EC material 3, such as an amorphous WO3 film and an MoO3 film, on a transparent substrate 1 having a transparent electrode 2 and a counter electrode plate composed of a substrate 4 having two-split counter electrodes 11 and 12 are arranged facing to each other; and the circumferential part is sealed with a sealing dmmber 7 and in the gap, an electrolyte 8 containing ions permitting the EC material to color and a porous body 9 providing the background of diaplay at need are arranged. One counter electrode 11 is made of a material having a negative potential to the EC material 3, and the other counter electrode 12 is made of a material having a positive potential. A solar cell is connected to the counter electrode as a secondary cell to eliminate the need for the secondary cell which is required normally when the solar cell is in use, so that the replacement of the cell is unnecessary.
