PURPOSE: To obtain a multicolor display element high in display quality, by laminating elements using styryl-like compounds as electrochromic materials becoming transparent when erased.
CONSTITUTION: For example, a styryl-like compd. having formulaIis dissolved in propylene carbonate using tetrabutylammonium perchlorate as a supporting electrolyte, and this mixture is sealed in as an upside electrochromic material 14, and a styryl-like compd. having formula II likewise dissolved is sealed in as a downside electrochromic material 15. When, e.g., 1.5V DC voltage is applied to upside electrodes 2 and 9 with the display electrode 2 set positive, it displays blue. When 1.5V DC voltage is applied to downside electrodes 4 and 11 using the display electrode 4 as a positive one, it displays red. When the 2 display electrodes 2, 4 are used as negative electrodes, and -1.5V is applied, they are decolored, and when the 2 display electrodes are simultaneously allowed to display color, purple display is obtained by addition of 2 colors of red and blue.
