To provide a lamp unit that is useful and manufacturable at low cost, and that selectively emits light of various qualities at freely selectable positions.
An electroluminescent lamp unit used as a signboard display comprises a substrate, an electroluminescent lamp, and a conductive jumper. The substrate has a conductive trace disposed on the surface thereof, and a transparent portion through which light passes. The electroluminescent lamp has an area smaller than that of the substrate, and has a first light emitting surface and a second light emitting surface opposite to the first light emitting surface and having an exposed conductive lead wire. The first light emitting surface is disposed at a predetermined position on the surface of the substrate, with the surfaces brought into contact with each other. The conductive jumper electrically connects the exposed conductive lead wire of the lamp to the conductive trace of the substrate.
