PURPOSE: To provide a focal plane shutter in which a shutter curtain can be allowed to remain at the stopping position by a relatively large holding force.

CONSTITUTION: A focal plane shutter is provided with first and second shutter curtains 14 and 16. First and second electromagnetic driving means 20 and 22 are respectively connected with the first and second shutter curtains. The driving means are energized by a controller 34 and an energizing means 32, and each shutter curtain is moved between an open position and a closed position with prescribed time delay. Also, first and second stopping means 58, 60, 98 and 100 are provided so as to be cooperated with the first and second driving means. When each shutter curtain reaches the open position or the closed position, the stopping means physically stops the corresponding driving means in front of the home position. A large holding force is obtained by a force with which the driving means tries to return to the home position.
