Abstract:
PURPOSE:To display an image and a pattern which are bright, high in contrast, and superior in spatial uniformity without using a polarizing prism nor a polarizing plate which has the same function as the former by utilizing light scattering characteristics obtained by applying a voltage to a liquid crystal compound body. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal compound body 21 is constituted by confining liquid crystal 23 to a transparent resin matrix 24 which is nearly equal in refrac tive index to nematic liquid crystal 23, and a target 9 is formed by interposing the liquid crystal compound body 21 so as to stick it to a transparent dielectric layer 22 and a transparent electrode 20. Then the spatial optical modulating tube is constituted by using this target 9, an electron gun 1, a vacuum container 11 which incorporates a collector 10 for controlling electrostatic charges on the surface of the target 9, and an electron beam deflection system which deflects an electron beam 15.
