To provide an electron emission element that has a gas absorption material uniformly distributed therein and therefore can provide uniform light emission; and also to provide lighting equipment that uses the electron emission element as a light source and a method of manufacturing a cathode electrode of the electron emission element.
The cathode electrode 2 of the electron emission element 1 comprises a carbon nanostructure 13 and an electron emission material 14, which are fixed on the surface of an electron transport layer 9. The carbon nanostructure 13 is a material that serves as the gas absorption material for absorbing a gas generated during the operation of the electron emission element 1 and a gas that could not have been eliminated during the manufacture of the electron emission element 1. The carbon nanostructure 13 is manufactured with its size under control. The leading end of the electron emission material 14 projects from above the top face of the carbon nanostructure 13.
