This electron emission element comprises first and second substrates 2, 4 opposedly arranged with a space to constitute walls of a vacuum container; cathode electrodes and gate electrodes 14, 10 positioned in a mutually insulated state on the first substrate with an insulating layer placed in between; a plurality of electron emitting parts 16 formed including an electron emitting material on the cathode electrodes; at least one anode electrode 20 positioned on the second substrate; red, green and blue fluorescent layers 22 positioned on the anode electrode; and the grid electrode 8 installed in the vacuum container and provided with a plurality of holes for passing of electrons emitted from the plurality of electron emitting parts. The thermal expansion coefficient of the grid electrode is set into a range of 80-120% of the thermal expansion coefficient of the first and second substrates.
