Title:
ELECTRORHEOLOGICAL FLUID AND ITS PRODUCTION
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3920957
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare an electrorheological fluid which undergoes a sufficiently large change in viscosity upon the application of a voltage and has a disperse phase having a density low enough to prevent the phase from settlement even after long-term storage.
SOLUTION: This fluid consists of an electrical insulation liquid and inorganic/organic hybrid particles dispersed therein and prepared by substituting a skeleton of an inorganic polymer comprising M-O-M bonds (wherein M is a metal or a semi-metal) with O-[-Si-(R)2-O-]n groups (wherein R is an organic group). The amount of the particles added is 5-60vol.%. This fluid can be produced by dissolving a metal alkoxide and a hydroxyl-terminated polysiloxane in an organic solvent, hydrolyzing the metal alkoxide by the addition of water in an amount of 2-50mol, per mol of the alkoxyl groups, separating the precipitated particles and dispersing these particles in an electrical insulation liquid.
