To provide an elevator capable of dispensing with increase of a dimension of a hoistway even when capacity of a hoist is increased, and capable of freely selecting a position for suspending an elevator car by a hoisting rope.
The hoist 10 is arranged so that a rotation shaft thereof extends to the vertical direction, and thereby it is not necessary to increase the dimension of the hoistway even when the dimension of the hoist 10 along the axial direction is increased when increasing the capacity of the hoist 10. A drive shaft 10a of the hoist 10 extends along the vertical direction, and thereby an area occupied by the hoist is steeply reduced in a horizontal cross section of the hoistway. Therefore, a freedom degree of a position for arranging the hoist 10 is enhanced, and the position for suspending the elevator car 3 by the hoisting rope 14 can be freely selected.
