To provide an elevator of a system completely different from a conventional system having smooth driving, manufacturable at low cost, and having high safety.

Two cylindrical members 12, 12' are vertically installed with a distance. The cylindrical members comprise cutout parts 12K, 12K' extending in the vertical direction. Screw shafts 10, 10' are passed in the cylindrical members. The screw shafts are rotatably pivoted at one position by using thrust bearings 14, 14'. Nut members 22, 22' are fitted to a car 20 correspondingly to the screw shafts. The nut members are threaded to the screw shafts. The elevator comprises a drive device 18 rotatingly driving the both screw shafts in synchronism with each other. The car is lifted by rotating the screw shafts by the drive device.
