PURPOSE: To accomplish an emergency stop of a vehicle if an abnormal condition occurs in a downward inclination part and the like.

CONSTITUTION: An emergency stop device is used for urgently stopping a vehicle 2 traveling on a track 1 in case of occurrence of an abnormal condition. The emergency stop device is provided with a light emitting device 5, which is arranged in the vehicle 2 and emits signal light, plural stopping members 6 arranged inside the track 1 along the longitudinal direction at the predetermined intervals, a projecting member 7 projecting/retracting the stopping member 6 from the track surface, and a light receiving device 16, which is arranged in the vicinity of the stopping member 6 and receives the signal light from the light emitting device 5 so as to operate the projecting means 7.
