PURPOSE: To make possible cut detection in a short time by deciding whether or not there is a cut between image data in an input image data group.
CONSTITUTION: Image data which are already encoded by variable-length encoding are recorded on recording media 1. This detecting device consists of a data amount extraction part 10 which extracts the amount of the encoded image data read out of the recording media 1, a control part 3, a memory part 4 consisting of memories 4A and 4B which store values indicated by the data amount extraction part 10, i.e., data amounts, and a comparative arithmetic part 5 which compares the data amounts outputted from the memories 4A and 4B with each other and decides whether or not there is a cut. Then the comparative arithmetic part 5 compares the values stored in the memory part 4 with a previously set threshold value or compares a value obtained by comparing plural values stored in the memory part 4 with the previously set threshold value to decide whether or not there is a cut between in-image encoded data in the input image data group.
