An endoscope 1 includes an illumination unit 10 and an imaging unit 70 for acquiring a subject image at a distal end 11 of an insertion section 12. The illumination unit 10 includes: a light emitting unit 30 having an LED (31) and emitting light from an upper surface; a wiring board 20 on which the light emitting unit 30 is disposed in the interior of a recess 21, and which has on a first main surface 20SA a connecting electrode 23 connected to an element electrode 32 of the LED (31) via a relay electrode 22 and internal wiring 24; a prism 50 for changing the direction of light emitted by the light emitting unit 30, disposed on an upper part of the upper surface of the light emitting unit 30 through a transparent resin layer 40; and a signal cable 60 connected to the connecting electrode 23.
