To fasten and control a starting element so that the fastening force of the starting element can surely generate an engine brake as requested on a downhill.
While a vehicle runs at a low speed creep torque when the vehicle is determined to be in a traveling range in S1, determined to be not braked in S2, and determined to be APO is 0 (accelerator pedal is released) and a vehicle speed VSP less than lockup vehicle speed, a vehicle accelerator α (magnitude of downhill grade of road surface) is calculated in S3, a creep torque command value Tc larger as α (downhill grade of road surface) is larger is obtained in S4 and S5, and a fastening pressure command value tPc for providing a fastening force by which the starting element can transmit a torque equal to Tc is calculated and output in S6. Consequently, the fastening force of the starting element is larger as α (downhill grade of road surface) is larger, and the engine brake according to the gradient of the road surface can be surely produced without slipping even on a sharp downhill grade of road surface.
