To provide a technology capable of preventing the deterioration of engine operation efficiency such as fuel consumption efficiency while shortening a period of warm-up operation until the engine is brought into a normal operating state.
In the engine which repeats and operates one cycle containing four strokes of intake, compression, expansion and exhaust, it is configured so as to change the number of strokes in one cycle, i.e. the number of strokes included in one cycle which alternatively selects four-stroke cycle operation which operates without adding a stroke different from four cycles in one cycle and increased stroke cycle operation which operates by being added with one or more of rest strokes which makes a piston reciprocate without combustion to four strokes in one cycle. A control means is provided which allows the four stroke cycle operation when the engine is started, and controls the number of strokes in one cycle based on the temperature of the engine so as to change the operation to the increased stroke cycle operation when the temperature of the engine reaches a predetermined value at which the completion of the warm-up operation of the engine is determined.
