To provide an engine starting system starting the engine of an automobile and having an excellent long-term service life by solving a problem wherein the engine cannot be started if a battery causes performance deterioration.
The engine starting system is constructed to have the battery charged by a generator and a capacitor bank 4, the capacitor bank 4 is mainly charged by braking energy and the battery 3 is connected in series to the capacitor bank 4 to drive a starter motor 5. Part of a dark current supplied from the battery 3 when a vehicle is at rest is charged to the capacitor bank 4 and the deterioration of the battery 3 is estimated from the characteristic during the charging. Thus, a condition of the battery 3 can be grasped, enabling to cope with beforehand and to avoid the worst state that the engine cannot be started by own power.
