To favorably engrave fine characters or the like by a method wherein a cutting in the main scanning direction is performed based on line data in the main scanning direction, which is prepared from a cutting image data to be engraved, and after moving a cutting tool in the subsidiary scanning direction by one line portion, a cutting in the main scanning direction is performed based on a following line data.
A control unit 7 reads and transmits a luster data which is stored in a memory unit 72 one row by one row, and in a driving control unit 72, the luster data is converted to a vector data for one line portion, and further to a control command of this engraving machine. By the control command, a carriage-driving unit 41, and a pen up-down mechanism 32 are controlled, and a cutting for one line portion is performed by a cutting pen. After the completion of the cutting for one line, the driving control unit 72 controls the up-down mechanism 32 and the carriage-driving unit 41, and raises the cutting pen and returns it to the original point. When there is a following line data, a Y bar driving mechanism 42 is controlled in the subsidiary scanning direction by one step portion, and the motion is returned to the reading motion for one line data which continues from the memory unit 72, and the same motions are performed after that.
