Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain an epoxy resin having low viscosity and excellent heat resistance, mechanical properties and electrical properties by reacting xylylene glycol with epichlorohydrin in the presence of a catalyst containing an alkali metal hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:A process for producing a glycidyl ether of xylylene glycol by reacting xylylene glycol with epichlorohydrin, wherein the reaction is performed in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and dimethyl sulfoxide or a quat. ammonium salt, and the obtained crude product is treated with an alkaline substance in an organic solvent. The epoxy resin obtained by the above process is represented by formula 1 (wherein n is 0 or an integer of 1 or grater) and has an average epoxy equivalent of 160 or below and a hydrolyzable chlorine content of 0.15% or below.
