To provide an apparatus and method for generating an error correction block which is characterized by that an ECC recording length does not exceed the innermost diameter of a small-sized optical storage medium and has superior error correcting capability for data in reproduction.
The method includes a stage of processing digital data on a byte-by-byte basis and arranging the processed digital data from 0th to (N-1)th columns, a stage of arranging (M×N) data blocks in K rows according to a data transmission sequence, a stage of adding a first error correction check word of 2×K bytes to each of N columns to form a first codeword of ((K×M)+2×K) bytes, and a stage of adding a second error correction check word of P types to each of ((K×M)+2K) rows to form a second codeword of (N+P) bytes.
