USE: An ether based nematic liquid crystal compound useful as an electrooptical display material.
PREPARATION: For example, a compound expressed by formula II is reacted with triphenylphosphine in toluene to afford a compound expressed by formula III. Then the compound expressed by formula III is treated with a strong base to give Witting reagent, which is then reacted with a compound expressed by formula IV to give a compound expressed by formula V. Then compound expressed by formula V is subjected to catalytic reduction in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst to afford a compound expressed by formula VI. Finally, the compound expressed by formula VI is reacted with cuporous cyanide in N,N-dimethylformamide to provide the compound expressed by formula I wherein Y is CH=CH.
