PURPOSE: To enable easy ethynylation reaction on any kind of carbonyl compound and to obtain an alkynol, by using a specific polar solvent in combination with a hydrocarbon solvent and reacting a carbonyl compound with an alkali metal acetylide in the solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An alkynol can be produced by ethynylating a carbonyl compound with an alkali metal acetylide. The reaction is carried out in a system produced by adding (A) a polar organic solvent inert to the alkali metal acetylide (preferably ethers such as tetrahydrofuran, amines, such as pyridine, amides such as N,N-dimethyl formamide, carbonitriles such as acetronitrile, sulfoxides such as N,N-dimethylsulfoxide or phosphoric acid amides such as hexamethyl phosphoric triamide) to (B) a solution containing an alkali metal acetylide and produced by reacting an alkali metal with an acetylene compound in a hydrocarbon solvent such as benzene, toluene, etc.
