To provide an excavating machine and an excavation method which can secure traffic under construction, and which are suitable for excavation construction of a narrow existing road.
The excavating machine 1 used for the excavation of a valley side of a road 101 along a mountain is provided with a trestle 2, a down-the-hole drill 3, and a weight 4. The trestle 2 having a passage 16 inside in the longitudinal direction of the road is provided along the road 101 so that it can move. The down-the-hole drill 3 is an excavating drill which is arranged on the valley side of the trestle 2, and the weight 4 is provided on the mountain side of the trestle 2. Because of this, a vertical hole 61 is formed on the valley side of the road 101 by the down-the-hole drill 3 on the valley side. Since the trestle 2 has the passage 16 inside, the traffic on the road 101 can be secured by the passage 16. Furthermore, by providing the weight 4 on the valley side of the trestle 2, a balance can be kept with the valley side on which the down-the-hole drill 3 is arranged.
