Abstract:
PURPOSE: To reduce the fuel consumption rate during emission of SOX while preventing an NOX absorbent from being poisoned by sulfur.
CONSTITUTION: An NOX absorbent 19 for absorbing NOX when the air-fuel ratio of inflow exhaust gas being lean, and for discharging absorbed NOX when the density of oxygen in the exhaust gas being decreased, is located in an engine exhaust passage, and an SOX absorbent 18 for absorbing SOX when the air-fuel ratio of inflow exhaust gas being lean, and for discharging absorbed SOX when it is rich is located in the engine exhaust passage, upstream of the NOX absorbent 19. The air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas flowing into the SOX absorbent and the NOX absorbent 19 is made to be rich when SOX is discharged from the SOX absorbent and is to be discharged from the NOX absorbent 19, and the degree of richness at this time is made to be lower as the temperature of the SOX absorbent is higher.
