Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately sense a deterioration of NOX catalyst installed in the exhaust passage of a lean combustion type internal combustion engine.
SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control device of an internal combustion engine is equipped with a NOX catalyst of storage reduction type installed in the exhaust passage of the engine and an absorption and emission control means to drop the exhaust air-fuel ratio for regenerating the NOX absorbing ability of the catalyst, wherein the air-fuel ratio in the exhaust gas flowing into the catalyst is lowered from the case in which the NOX storage ability is regenerated temporarily, and deterioration of the catalyst is judged on the basis of the time in which the air-fuel ratio in the exhaust gas flowing out from the catalyst at this time of the ratio being lowered indicates a rich air-fuel ratio.
