PURPOSE: To improve a range of the purification rate of nitrogen oxide in an exhaust gas purification device by combining an exhaust gas reflux device with a nitrogen oxide purification catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Control is carried out by utilizing a control means 5 by driving an exhaust gas reflux device 4 when the temperature is less than an active temperature range of a nitrogen oxide purification catalyst 3, and making the exhaust gas reflux device 4 in operative when the temperature is in the active temperature range of the nitrogen oxide purification catalyst 3. In the case of an exhaust gas purification device 1 having the nitrogen oxide decomposition catalyst 3 provided in an exhaust passage 6 of a diesel engine 2, and an exhaust gas purification device 4 in which partial exhaust gas which flows through the exhaust gas passage 6 in 6 is returned to the intake passage 8 of the engine 2.
