An adsorbent 10 obtd. by carrying a zeolite contg. at least one ion of an element having an electronegativity of ≥1.40 and a catalytic material with at least one noble metal among Pt, Pd and Rh carried on a heat resistant inorg. oxide on a monolithic carrier by coating is disposed in the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine and at least one carrying carrier 2 obtd. by carrying a catalytic compoment having ability to remove harmful components in exhaust gas and/or an adsorbing component having HC adsorbing ability on a monolithic carrier by coating is disposed on the upper stream side of the adsorbent 10 in the flowing direction of exhaust gas. The total volume of the carrier 2 is ≥0.61.
