PURPOSE: To restrain the temperature from lowering so as to stabilize the combustion, by enabling an exhaust gas recirculating device to sufficiently ensure exhaust gas to be fed into a cylinder during suction stroke.

CONSTITUTION: Those of engine cylinders ξ1 to ξ4 which are during suction stroke, are directly connected to those of exhaust ports 6 which are during exhaust stroke. Further, EGR gas intake valves 16 for opening and closing passages 15 during suction stroke are provided to the engine cylinders ξ1 to ξ4. Further, flow regulating valves 17 for regulating the flow rate of exhaust gas flowing through the passages 15 are provided on the passages 15.
