Abstract:
To maintain high exhaust emission control rate of a catalyst irrespective of atmospheric pressure.SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine includes: a catalytic converter 22 disposed in an exhaust passage; an exhaust control valve 26 disposed downstream in the exhaust passage relative to the catalytic converter 22; and an atmospheric pressure sensor 44a for detecting atmospheric pressure. The exhaust emission control system controls the opening of the exhaust control valve to be decreased when the atmospheric pressure is low as compared to that when the atmospheric pressure is high.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
