PURPOSE: To obtain an extract from Nostoc commune having antimicrobial activity, inhibitory activity against germination of spore, mitosis and germination of seed and sueful as an anticancer agent and antimicrobial agent.
CONSTITUTION: This extract from Nostoc commune is obtained by bringing the surface of a plant body of Nostoc commune which is a chlorophyceous plant into contact with an alkanol (e.g. methoanol) to extract Nostoc commune. Nostoc commune is a chlorophyceous plant called also as ISHIKURAGE in Japanese and widely distributed in the world and is grown in damp ground of garden, ground, school ground, alley, etc., and proliferated in a period with high moisture, especially in the rainy season and appears as a green-brown or yellow-green Auricularia auricula-like colony. A new compound of formula I (R1 is OH or ester; R2 is H or acyl; A and B together form a group of formula II) is obtained from this extract of Nostoc commune.
