PURPOSE: To need no exclusive original width detector nor exclusive sensor and therefore to increase the freedom degree of a designing space and to miniaturize a facsimile equipment by detecting the width of an original by means of a CCD which reads the original.

CONSTITUTION: A sensor 1 detects whether an original, 9 is set on 1 facsimile equipment or not. If set, an original feeding motor 4 is turned on and a timer is set. Then a limiting means a momitors whether an A4-width sensor mark is shielded from the light by the original 9. If not shielded, the presence or absence of a time-over state is monitored. If the time-over state is confirmed, an error is set and the motor 4 is turned off. When the A4-width sensor mark is shielded from the light, the B4-width is read by a CCD 7. Meanwhile the A4-width is read as long as the B4-width sensor mark is not shielded from the light.
