Abstract:
To provide a method that can predict a fatigue strength resistance (shear strength) of a cast material easily and quickly at low cost.SOLUTION: A method for predicting a shear fatigue strength of a cast material in a desired rolling condition consists of: (1) manufacturing at least two test pieces from a cast raw material having the same composition as that of a pressure roll outer layer material; (2) in a state of applying a compressive stress to the test pieces in their axis direction, repeatedly providing larger shear stresses around the axis at a plurality of levels applied by rolling to generate and develop shear cracks in surfaces of the test pieces and thereby measure the number of twisting until breakage; (3) plotting the measurements of the number of twisting until breakage on a double logarithmic graph of the shear stress amplitude-the number of twisting to determine a straight line of the shear stress amplitude-the number of twisting; and (4) extrapolating the straight line in a number of times equal to the number of twisting until breakage demanded in the rolling to determine the shear stress amplitude in a desired number of twisting until breakage, and determining the shear stress amplitude as the shear fatigue strength of the cast material.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
