PURPOSE: To separate and transfer paper sheets and the like one by one reliably even if the thickness of the paper sheets change, by changing a gap between a feed roller and a friction member depending on a kind and thickness of paper sheets and banknotes.
CONSTITUTION: A friction member shaft 16 to which a friction member 15 confronting a feed roller 5 is turned by a necessary angle by a motor 19 every time thickness of paper sheets to be separated change. Driving force of the motor 19 is transmitted to the friction member shaft 16 through a drive belt 20. The friction member shaft 16 is forced to the side of confronting feed roller through a shaft presser 21 by a spring 12. The shaft 16 is so constructed that is can turn freely even through the shaft presser 21 pressed the friction member shaft 16. As a result, when paper sheets to be separatted are fed between the feed roller 5 and the friction member 15, pressing force acted between them is kept suitably. In addition, when the friction member is worn and the gap between the feed roller and it changes or when a kind of paper sheets to be separated is changed with a change of paper thickness, an adjusting mechanism 23 of the friction member shaft 16 is capable of adjusting a gap between the feed roller 5 and the friction member 15 within a range of h so that the gap has a suitable dimension.
