Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound exhibiting ferrielectric phase in broad temperature range and exhibiting high speed response in spite of small spontaneous polarization and capable of suitably useful for active matrix type liquid crystal display element driving every each image. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by the formula [R is a 6-12C straight chain alkyl; X is H or F; (m) and (n) are each 1-3; C* is asymmetric carbon], e.g. R-(-)-3-fluoro-4-(1,4-dimethylpentyloxycarbonyl)phenyl=4'-n- nonyloxybiphenyl-4-carboxylate. The compound of the formula is obtained by adding, e.g. thionyl chloride to 4-(4'-n-nonyloxy)biphenylcarboxylic acid, heating the mixture under reflux, adding pyridine and toluene thereto and dropping a benzene solution of R-(-)-4-hydroxy-2-fluoro-1-(1,4-dimethylpentyloxycarbonyl) benzene thereto to carry out reaction.
