To provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition which exhibits a phase series of liquid phase (Iso)-cholesteric phase (Ch)-smectic A phase (Sa)- chiral smectic C phase (Sc), has a wide temperature range wherein the Sc phase is exhibited, especially has low crystallization temperature and melting point, and does not crystallize at low temperatures.
This ferroelectric liquid crystal composition contains at least one compound represented by formula I, at least one compound represented by formula II, at least one compound represented by formula III, and at least one compound represented by formula IV (R1 to R4 and R7 are each a 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy; R5 and R6 are each a 1-18C alkyl; R8 is a 2-18C alkyl; X1 and X2 are each H or F; and * denotes asymmetric carbon).
