Title:
FERROELECTRIC LIQUID CRYSTAL
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2948783
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject liquid crystal compound bearing an antipodic haloalkyl residue, and useful for displays having a memorizing capability for displaying letters, signs or figures and quick in startup.
SOLUTION: This ferroelectric liquid crystal compound, which is shown by the formula [X is F, Br or Cl; E is a halogen; R1 is (R3) (R4) CH; R2 is CkH2k+1O; (k) is 1-12; R3 and R4 are each CH3 or C2H5], is obtained by esterification between an antipodic α-carboxylic acid or a derivative therefrom and an appropriate hydroxy compound. In this case, the antipodic α-carboxylic acid can be prepared by reaction of an antipodic α-amino acid, by dissolution from the racemic α-halocarboxylic acid, or by asymmetric synthesis. This liquid crystal compound has high spontaneous polarity by virtue of the high dipole moment of the haloalkyl derivative, therefore affording thermally stable displays short in startup time.
