Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent defective sintering due to poor dispersion, etc., of whisker from occurring and enable the obtaining of a material of uniformly densified high-strength and high-toughness fiber-reinforced ceramics and further the extension of an application range of the material as a material for large-sized various industrial mechanical parts including the field of an abrasion-resistant material and a material for tools.

CONSTITUTION: Ceramic whisker having a cubic crystal structure in a quantity of 5-80vol.% based on the total volume is added to powder consisting essentially of at least one selected from alumina, silicon nitride and sialon and the resultant mixed powder or its compact is then burnt while applying a temperature and a pressure so as to provide ≥3%/hr volume shrinkage rate based on the volume before the burning, e.g. at 10kg/cm2.hr maximum pressurizing rate and curving a part of the whisker.
