To suppress the deposition and growth of sludge on a filter membrane in an apparatus for filtering and electrolytically sterilizing water.
An air lift 42 is operated in connection with the lowering of the water level in a storage chamber 24 and the water in a water collecting chamber 20 is transferred to a biological filter bed chamber 22. The water biologically treated with the biological filter bed 44 in a biological filter bed chamber 22 flows in the upwardly turned pipe part 52 of a filtering and sterilizing cylinder 50 through a flooding pipe 48 to be filtered by a ceramic bed and this filtered water is subsequently electrolyzed and sterilized in the vicinity of an electrode 64 to overflow from an opening 62 to the storage chamber 24 through a filter membrane to be sent to a demand place through a reclaimed water supply pipe 70. The filter membrane is provided so as to surround the electrode 64 and a sterilizing component generated by electrolytic sterilization suppresses the deposition and growth of sludge on the filter membrane.
